In the courtyard, just steps from the impressive monastery with its cloister and church, stands the former financial office – once the administrative heart of monastic finance and property. Today, it is home to a new and imaginative educational space that invites young visitors to explore the history of Maulbronn. At numerous hands-on stations, they can dive into the world of Maulbronn’s monks and discover how the Cistercians lived in the Middle Ages – brought to life in a way that is both engaging and unique.
At the Name-o-mat, young visitors receive their new monastic names.
Each space in the Young Monastic World is dedicated to a different aspect of life in the monastery. Visitors first meet five characters who serve as guides on their journey into the past. Children then take on the role of novice monks – complete with a new name to match the medieval setting. Then the adventure begins: in carefully crafted, themed spaces, the world of the Cistercian monks is brought to life in all its richness and detail.

In the Young Monastic World, guests explore the hierarchies and daily routines of choir monks and lay brothers through hands-on activities. They learn about the Cistercians’ spiritual life, their table manners, and their work, and they can try their hand at traditional tasks such as writing with quills and building a Roman arch. Accompanying them throughout are five characters, each with a unique role in monastery life – including one girl cleverly hidden among them. The journey ends with a return to the present day.

With Pssst…!The Young Monastic World, the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg offers an innovative educational experience for children and teens aged eight and over. It enables them to explore the history of Maulbronn Monastery in a way that is engaging and age-appropriate – while also finding out about the site’s cultural heritage. At the heart of the concept is learning through experience: the Young Monastic World invites participation, conveying valuable knowledge through hands-on activity. The experience is available exclusively with a guided tour.
