International UNESCO World Heritage Round Table

In collaboration with the German Commission for UNESCO and the World Heritage Coordination Office at the Federal Foreign Office, the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg will be hosting a digital round table to mark the 30th UNESCO anniversary of Maulbronn Monastery entitled “30 Years of World Heritage: Successes and Challenges around the Globe” on Thursday, March 7, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Central European Time: At the event, Maulbronn Monastery will exchange ideas with other World Heritage sites that were also added to the World Heritage List in 1993 or 1994 – such as the old town of Bamberg, the historic center of Vilnius and the whale sanctuary of El Vizcaino Mexico.

Focus on Key Themes

World Heritage managers will report on current challenges and solutions at their respective World Heritage sites. “Being part of the World Heritage family means learning from each other, and that’s what this event is for,” says Patricia Alberth, Managing Director of the State Palaces and Gardens. The focus will be on addressing sustainability, climate change and tourism. The round table will be moderated by Carolin Kolhoff, Head of the World Heritage Division of the German UNESCO Commission, while the closing remarks will be given by Friederike Hansell, Head of the World Heritage Coordination Office at the Federal Foreign Office. Attendance at the round table is free of charge, registration is required by Monday, March 4, by sending an e-mail to tagung@ssg.bwl.de.

A Title That Involves Responsibility

Included on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List 30 years ago, Maulbronn Monastery has since attracted several million visitors from all over the world. The anniversary is to be celebrated with a look ahead to the future. The digital round table offers an opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved to date while at the same time addressing the global challenges facing the World Heritage Site. This virtual dialogue session will enable not just experts but also interested members of the public to ask questions and gain insights into the significance of the UNESCO title.
